Kathleen Lynch didn’t plan her escape from the 9 to 5.  She was a corporate lawyer laid off during the financial crisis of 2008. In the summer of 2009 her law firm (whose biggest client was Bank of America) got around to laying off all part time attorneys.  She enjoyed the flexibility and didn’t want to give that up.  “I had twin boys who were small children at that time and didn’t want to take on a full time schedule. So I decided to hang out my shingle and am still practicing that way today and love it.”

Kathleen and her family live the the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina and love it. “We didn’t want to move and no one was hiring so I hung out a shingle”. She is an intellectual property attorney and has managed to build up a nice little practice since going out on her own.  It wasn’t always easy, but she has made it work.  “Don’t get discouraged. Success often takes time and patience. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from any source you can find that is willing and able”.

Working From Home

Escaping the 9 to 5 has enabled Kathleen to work from home part of the time and be home when her boys arrive in from school. “They are twin 13 year olds and I know that our time together is limited. In about 5 years they will be off to college and our time together will be much more limited.  I feel I have been so blessed to be able to have this opportunity. I don’t think I could ever go back to the 9-5 routine. There is so much freedom and opportunity. I love my job and my position. I also recognize when there are times that I have to work when I’d rather not, but overall it is a great way to make a living”.

Kathleen continues to grow her law practice from home.  She is hoping to grow her firm so that she can continue to provide quality legal services in the area of intellectual property law to more entrepreneurs and small businesses.
