Josée Perron had tried and failed at starting her own side hustle before. But when the office politics at her 9-5, working as an editor, became too intense, she decided it was time to give entrepreneurship another try. “I couldn’t stay in this toxic environment any longer. Living in Spain, where companies tend to have more traditional, hierarchical and male-dominated management, I knew that even if I left this company and got a job elsewhere, I’d be dealing with the same struggles. The culture within this company left me with clipped wings and a lack of potential for growth and expansion. I dreamt of bigger things for myself”.

So Josée quit. She had already started a business called “You Choose the Way” on the side, but it was time to figure out how to make a business of it. “Looking back, I left a bit preemptively. I jumped ship before my raft was even inflated. But I was happy to have the time and space to learn about growing and maintaining my new boat”. She spend over a year learning about creating an online business, digital marketing, and taking coaching courses. She has never looked back.

Positive Mental Attitude

The main resource that keeps Josée moving forward is her meditation practice. “Entrepreneurship requires solid mental strength. With no boss to provide guidance, support or encouragement, entrepreneurs much learn to give themselves these nudges. Meditation helps me keep my mind clear and strong for whatever comes my way”. She also watches and listens to plenty of Marie Forleo, Gary Vee and Youtube tutorials.

Newfound Freedom

Josée is now able to build her own schedule and the format of her professional life. She can live in one place, but go home for visits of a few months whenever she feels like it, bringing her work home with her.

“Also, as a multi-passionate person, I love to fill my days with different types of projects and sources of income. No two days are the same and I like that. I like the variety that my days include”.

Advice for Escapees

Like many Entrepreneurs, Josée initially tried to do everything herself. She eventually found that collaboration makes things much easier. “Working with others whose businesses align with your own can benefit both of you. Seek out opportunities where it’s a win/win. Don’t look at the mountain before you, just focus on the next few steps. Starting your own business can feel very daunting, especially online businesses. But to not get paralyzed by the number of tasks that will need to get done, only pay attention to the few things that you need to get done now”.

Through her entrepreneurial journey Josée has learned to stop looking at how everyone else is doing things. She has figured out what feels right for her and done it that way. “Not only does this help differentiate you in a full market, but each step forward feels more comfortable and aligned with your values and goals”.
