Escaping the 9 to 5 means different things to different people. Many people want to stay in a 40 hour a week corporate environment, they just want more flexibility. Others want the beach house in Ecuador where they can do consulting via a satellite. There is no one right answer.
I have tried a bunch of different models over the past 25 years. Military, full time consultant, full time employee, part contract – part freelance, etc. In today’s economy it is less about one direction or another, and more about creating multiple streams of income.
Do you need coaching?
There are many challenges in escaping the 9 to 5. If you haven’t done it yet, you may be dealing with your golden handcuffs. It can be hard to walk away from the security, paycheck, insurance and other amenities that come with a regular job. What’s holding you back? Maybe you don’t know where to start. Many people will tell you to follow your passion and the money will follow. It doesn’t always work that way. The object is to leverage your current skills into your next adventure. This is not to say you have to stay in the same market. What are you doing now that will help you do what you want to do next?
The grass isn’t always greener. Going out on your own is rewarding but can be very challenging. You quickly find out all the hats you have to wear. What things should you do yourself and what things can you outsource? Then there is the solo factor. There’s more room at the top, but it can be lonely there. It can be helpful to get insights from others who are in the same boat, or those that have been there before.
